How Pulo Coffee Became the Coffee Cart for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Gala in Los Angeles

What would you do if you were asked to serve coffee at a gala? Actually, what even is a gala? What started as coffee service for the museum team grew into something we couldn't have scripted: the specialty coffee cart at one of the most significant cultural events in Los Angeles history.

This is how that happened.

How Pulo Coffee Became the Specialty Coffee Partner for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Our first engagement with the Lucas Museum was serving coffee for the museum staff. Then came pre-tours, where the team was preparing to welcome executives ahead of opening day. Then a friends and family gathering hosted by George Lucas himself. Each event built on the last. Each one was a chance to show up, do good work, and be trusted with something a little more significant next time.

By the time the opening gala arrived, we had served six separate events at the museum over the course of several months. By then, we knew the space and the team well.

That kind of continuity happens when you treat every event, including the smaller ones, like it matters. If you want to understand what goes into building that kind of trust at a major institution, here's how we think about specialty coffee service and why consistency matters at every level.

What the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Opening Gala Actually Looked Like

The opening night gala took place on September 19, 2026, three days before the museum's public opening on September 22. George Lucas and Mellody Hobson hosted the evening at the museum's Exposition Park campus, welcoming artists, filmmakers, collectors, and cultural leaders.

According to Blooloop, the gala was co-chaired by Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Lewis Hamilton, Jensen Huang, JR, and Pharrell Williams.

Guests explored more than 30 galleries across the 300,000-square-foot building before gathering outside for an opening program that included a live choir performance and a drone show over Lucas Plaza, narrated by Oprah Winfrey and Samuel L. Jackson. NBC Los Angeles called it one of the most anticipated cultural openings in the city's recent history.

The museum itself, designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, had been years in the making. Haute Living covered the evening in detail. You could feel that weight in every corner of the space.

How Pulo Coffee Set Up a Custom Branded Coffee Cart Inside the Lucas Museum Opening Gala

Our setup for the gala was inside the Skywalker Grill, a VIP room with frosted glass walls that could clear with the flip of a switch, opening the view to the broader event. The space was stunning. The kind of room that earns a second look before you notice anything else in it.

Our cart was custom branded with the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art logo. We ran a standard specialty espresso bar: La Marzocco machine, freshly specialty roasted beans from Be Bright Coffee, our homemade syrups, the full setup. Every guest who came to the cart got a made-to-order drink in a space that had been designed with the same level of care as everything else in the building.

What It's Like to Cater Specialty Coffee at a Cultural Gala in Los Angeles

The room was full of people who understood they were part of something historic. Guests who carried themselves accordingly. There was a sense of occasion you could feel from the moment you walked in.

At some point during the evening, Al Pacino ordered a decaf cappuccino. What stayed with us more though than any individual moment was the weight of being trusted with this night at all. Six events over several months, and then the evening everything the museum's team had been building toward finally arrived, and we were there for it.

What This Partnership Taught Us About Specialty Event Coffee Catering in Los Angeles

The Lucas Museum didn't call us for the gala. They called us months earlier for something much smaller.

That's the pattern we see in our strongest corporate coffee catering relationships. The clients who bring us in for their most important moments are almost never clients we met at those moments. They're clients who watched how we operated when the stakes were lower and decided they wanted us there when it mattered most.

For brands, institutions, and production teams planning significant events in Los Angeles, the relationship you build with your coffee cart partner before the big night is what makes the big night possible. We believe the work you do on the smaller events earns you a place at the larger ones.
